American Bar Association First Ethics Opinion on Generative AI

On July 29, 2024, the American Bar Association ABA Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility released its first formal opinion dealing with the use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the practice of law. The opinion addresses the use of generative AI in the context of a number of model rules in the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, including rules dealing with competence, confidentiality of information, communications, and fees.
