On-call Scientist
(Posted 1/20/10)
The AAAS Science and Human Rights Program (SHRP) is seeking scientists to fill
many of our On-Call Scientist positions. One year ago we unveiled "On-call"
Scientist, an SHRP initiative which aims to expand pro bono science in the
service of human rights by connecting scientists interested in volunteering
their skills and knowledge with human rights organizations in need of scientific
expertise. Over 360 scientists from around the world have signed-up to
volunteer, and requests for volunteers are also starting to come in. Indeed, we
currently have one specific request for which volunteer forensic scientists are
needed. A well-regarded human rights organization based in Montana has submitted
a request for forensic scientists with particular expertise in: DNA; ballistics;
handwriting analysis; forensic anthropology; and crime scene reconstruction.
These experts would be asked to assist the organization in reviewing
post-conviction claims of innocence leading to the exoneration of inmates
wrongfully convicted, or the conviction of a guilty individual. In general the
work could be done from home and would not require the expert to live in or
travel to Montana. If you or someone you know is suitably qualified and would
like to volunteer with our "On-call" Scientists program and/or contribute to the
specific project outlined above, please contact us at
oncall@aaas.org or go to
http://oncallscientists.aaas.org/default.aspx.
